On my holiday i had just spent the last few days in melaka and now I am in Johor Bahru. Johor Bahru is situated about a 45 minute drive from singapore and comparing it to melaka you can definitely get an idea that it’s close to singapore. You can tell from little things like the cars getting around with singapore number plates, durian sellers and signs in shops that entice singaporeans into their stores. One thing that i noticed was in johor bahru there were a lot of non-halal restaurants. It seems that the singaporean population must head to johor bahru to get their pork fix and it shows in the dining options available.

After i checked in at the hotel it was about 6:30 so i walked around looking for somewhere to eat. A common problem i had in malaysia and singapore is there is almost too much good stuff, there were so many things that i wanted to eat! I stopped next to a particular restaurant to have a drink of my water and the manager came up and started talking to me, asking me food questions. When he asked me what food i like my response was “pork”, he smiled and said they have lots of pork if i would like to take a seat. When i sat down and looked at the menu i saw that there was a lot of pork! Probably 90 percent of the menu was pork.

The manager had also suggested that i have a glass of their iced tea which comes from the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. I really enjoyed this, I enjoyed that no sugar was added as i find that adding sugar hides the wonderful bitterness that is present in good tea. This really went well with the soup that i had later. 8/10

This was one particular dish that the manager recommended to me. It was steamed rice served with strips of thinly sliced pork belly that were coated with a thick black pepper sauce. Prior to this i hadn’t had pork belly which had been stir fried before and i have to say that it works really well! I really enjoyed this dish, the black pepper in particular made me want to keep going back for more. 9/10

As i was sitting down talking to the manager i could see that there was a particular soup on every single table in the restaurant, i asked the manager what particular soup this was and his response was “pork and melon soup.” I thought that sounded like an interesting combination so i decided to give it a try. The soup was absolutely fantastic! It was nice and bitter which went really well with the black pepper sauce of the previous dish. Served next to the soup were two or three chillies. Now this particular fact slipped my mind but i put about 3/4 of one chili in my dish and it made the dish so spicy! Almost too spicy to eat! 9/10 (before adding the chilli) 8/10 (after adding the chilli)

I really liked my dinner, i found that the staff were friendly and they serve lots of pork which are two pretty big ticks in my book. If anyone reading this is planning a trip to johor bahru i would definitely add this to your list of places to go.
