I was looking for somewhere to go for dinner near where i was staying in Melaka, to be honest as much as i was looking for somewhere to go for dinner I was also enjoying walking around the streets of Melaka and taking photos in the beautiful afternoon light like the one above. I remember the thought of “I can’t believe i am in Malaysia” kept running through my head as i walked around.

I found the eleven restaurant as it was just around the corner from my hotel and the staff out the front were very friendly. The staff mentioned that this particular restaurant specialises in “Portuguese food” which did seem interesting to me.

While i looked over the menu deciding what to have i had ordered a Carlsberg special brew and slowly sipped that. This was the first time that i have tried Carlsberg special brew and taste wise it has very little in common with the standard Carlsberg beer, it actually tastes a lot like the james squire range of beers. While this is a good thing, i found that it didn’t really match with the food that well.

While i was waiting for my food I was brough a complimentary plate of pickled with some dried fish. I thought that this was fantastic beer food as it instantly made me want another beer!Image may be NSFW.

From the menu there were a couple of things that jumped out at me, the first was the fact that they have clams on the menu. Clams are one of my favourite things in the world and in this rendition they have been steamed with a garlic and ginger sauce. They were cooked perfectly and had a lot of flavour going on!

As much as i enjoyed the clams it was the second dish i ordered that really wowed me. This was a plate of sambal kangkung, which is a malaysian variety of spinach that is grown in the water. This spinach is stir fried with garlic and fermented shrimp paste, this stuff goes with rice like cream goes with strawberries. Absolutely fantastic! The wait staff were surprised that i ordered a ‘large’ portion and I was able to finish everything!

At the end of the meal one of the staff members came up with a camera and asked me a few questions about my meal, then they asked me to write a few words on a whiteboard and he would take a picture (i used this as an opportunity to plug simonsayseat.net), then he printed one copy to give to me and one copy to put up on the wall in the bar (i only wrote in the top corner because i thought that lots of people would write on the wall throughout the course of the night).

At the end of the day this was still a pretty touristy place but as a example of how great the malaysian food culture is, even a tourist place can turn out a pretty solid meal.
